OVERSIZE
These are annual
“magazines” of the Joplin Globe
newspaper featuring stories on mining and related industries in the Tri-State
Mining District of Missouri, Oklahoma, and Kansas.
Included are production summaries for leading mining companies and
articles on mineral industries in the Tri-State and the United States. The magazines are illustrated and carry
advertisements by lead and zinc mining and milling companies.
The Joplin Globe is still the leading
newspaper of Jasper County,
Missouri. During the heyday of the mining period in
the Tri-State Mining District, the Globe was
the most informative local source for the prices of lead and zinc ore, innovations
in mining and milling, and trends in the mineral industries. At the beginning of each year, the newspaper
published a comprehensive summary of the previous year’s activity in the
Tri-State. In these annual editions, the
Globe featured articles on the city
of Joplin, local businesses, schools and other
civic matters, workmen’s compensation and other topics of interest to miners,
the future of mining in the Tri-State District, and general mining trends in
the United States. Each issue included lists of the leading
producers in the district, summaries of annual lead and zinc production for Oklahoma, Missouri, and Kansas, and comparative
summaries of previous annual outputs.
Each edition also carries an alphabetical directory of mining firms in
the district, along with illustrated advertisements for many of the firms and
allied enterprises in Joplin, Missouri,
Baxter Springs and Treece, Kansas,
and Cardin, Miami, and Picher, Oklahoma.
Both issues were
printed on newsprint and have been bound in library bindings.
