The Old Settlers
Reunion and Texas County Fair is an annual event held at Houston,
the seat of Texas
County. The 1956 Fair featured agricultural and livestock
exhibitions common to such events, including a horse show, exhibitions of
cattle, hogs, sheep, chickens, and agricultural produce, and a home economics
section. Entries were judged and cash
prizes awarded in the various categories.
Entertainment included a horse pulling contest, concerts by the military
band from Fort Leonard Wood and the Houston
High School band, square
dancing, and miscellaneous variety acts.
A special feature of the Fair was the homecoming of Emmett Kelly, the
famous circus clown known as “Weary Willie,” who was a native of Texas County. Kelly performed during the first night of the
Fair, and was the guest of honor the following night for dedication of the
“Emmett Kelly Park” in Houston.
