This is “What They Said,” a collection of stories and anecdotes regarding residents of Maries County, Missouri, by Dr. J. Milton Shockley, a local historian and past president of the Maries County Historical Society.
James Milton Shockley was descended from a prominent pioneer family of Gasconade and Maries counties in Missouri. An attorney, he was also keenly interested in local history. As president of the Maries County Historical Society, he was instrumental in the publication of Everett M. King’s History of Maries County (Cape Girardeau, Mo.: Ramfre Press, 1963), the manuscript of which had been completed but never published by the author.
“What They Said” is a collection of anecdotes regarding some early residents of Maries County and Vienna, the county seat, with emphasis on their “rare wit and their manner of expression.” The work is not dated, but seems to have been compiled in the 1940s or 1950s.
