the FFA chapter at West Plains in
The purpose of the FFA is the development of agricultural skills, leadership, and citizenship through programs promoting agricultural careers. Local chapters are organized by vocational agriculture classes in schools and are linked with state and national associations. FFA members participate in agricultural improvement, community service, and organized rural recreational activities designed to develop character, citizenship, thrift, and patriotism. Educational programs include regional contests in crop production, animal husbandry, farm electrification, agricultural mechanics, and public speaking. Group and chapter activities include community programs, educational trips, state conventions and leadership camps, and scrapbook contests.
Students of
vocational agriculture and their advisors from forty-five schools met at
Steve Douglass, the donor
of the scrapbook collection, was the vocational agriculture instructor and FFA
advisor at West Plains High School, 1955-1966.
The scrapbooks illustrate activities of the West Plains chapter during
his tenure as advisor, and were assembled for annual scrapbook contests at
state conventions. The materials have
been removed from the scrapbooks and placed in folders 1-10. They include newspaper clippings and
photographs on the chapter’s local activities and participation in the Howell
County Fair, photographs of members and officers of the West Plains chapter,
and printed materials concerning annual state conventions. Folder 11 contains a printed history, FFA at 50 in
