These are scrapbooks of the FFA chapter at West Plains in Howell County, Missouri.  The scrapbooks include photographs, newspaper clippings, and miscellaneous printed material on the chapter’s activities, 1955-1966.  There is also a printed history of the FFA in Missouri, 1928-1978.

The purpose of the FFA is the development of agricultural skills, leadership, and citizenship through programs promoting agricultural careers.  Local chapters are organized by vocational agriculture classes in schools and are linked with state and national associations.  FFA members participate in agricultural improvement, community service, and organized rural recreational activities designed to develop character, citizenship, thrift, and patriotism.  Educational programs include regional contests in crop production, animal husbandry, farm electrification, agricultural mechanics, and public speaking.  Group and chapter activities include community programs, educational trips, state conventions and leadership camps, and scrapbook contests.

Students of vocational agriculture and their advisors from forty-five schools met at Columbia in 1928 to organize the FFA in Missouri.  The national association issued the Missouri charter in 1929.  Missouri chapters counted 3,200 members by 1937.  Annual state conventions have been held every year except 1943.

Steve Douglass, the donor of the scrapbook collection, was the vocational agriculture instructor and FFA advisor at West Plains High School, 1955-1966.  The scrapbooks illustrate activities of the West Plains chapter during his tenure as advisor, and were assembled for annual scrapbook contests at state conventions.  The materials have been removed from the scrapbooks and placed in folders 1-10.  They include newspaper clippings and photographs on the chapter’s local activities and participation in the Howell County Fair, photographs of members and officers of the West Plains chapter, and printed materials concerning annual state conventions.  Folder 11 contains a printed history, FFA at 50 in Missouri 1928-1978, published by the Missouri Association FFA, 1978.
