These are the records of the Athena Club, a women’s club at Charleston in Mississippi County, Missouri.  The records consist of minute books, 1953-1992; and scrapbooks, ca. 1941-1985.

Eleven charter members organized the Athena Club on 23 May 1935 at Charleston, Missouri.  Named after the goddess Athena, the club had self and social improvement through the study of art, music, and literature as its goals.  The club met monthly at the homes of its members.  Later the Mississippi County Public Library in Charleston became the club’s meeting place.

The club participated in many community activities including awards to high school students, the Girl Scouts, and the Mississippi County Historical Society, support for the hot lunch program in the schools, participation in the Dogwood-Azalea Festival, sponsorship of art shows and musical presentations, production of calendars, and charitable work.

The final meeting of the Athena Club was held on 20 May 1997.

The Athena Club collection consists of minute books beginning on 7 September 1953 and continuing through 16 November 1992; and scrapbooks, ca. 1941-1980s.  Mrs. Paul Hill, the last custodian of the Athena Club’s records, has deposited the original material at the Newnam Library in Charleston, Missouri.
