R Hubbard, Spencer M., 1857-
676
Papers, 1849-1902.
Four folders.
These are miscellaneous
papers of Spencer M. Hubbard, physician and county clerk of Texas County, Missouri. Included are personal papers as well as
items of county business. There is also
the medical account book of Spencer’s father, Dr. John H. Hubbard, 1849-1852,
and minutes of the Texas County Medical Association, 1888.
John H. Hubbard was a
native of Randolph County, Missouri.
After attending schools in Missouri and
New York, he began medical practice in Pocahontas, Arkansas. About 1848, he moved to Texas County, Missouri,
where he was one of the first physicians.
His son, Spencer M. Hubbard, was born in Texas County
in 1857. He also trained as a physician,
and practiced at Elk Creek and Mountain Grove, before establishing a practice
in Cabool, Missouri, in 1884. He was elected clerk of Texas County, Missouri,
in 1886. He moved to San Gabriel, Texas,
about 1893.
The collection includes
items representing the medical practices of both John H. Hubbard and Spencer M.
Hubbard. Folder 1 contains the medical
account book of Dr. John H. Hubbard at Houston,
1849-1852. Folder 2 contains an undated
address to a meeting of physicians in northern Arkansas that probably derives from the
period when John H. Hubbard was practicing at Pocahontas. The folder also contains minutes of the Texas
County Medical Association, of which Spencer M. Hubbard was apparently the
secretary, for 1888. Folder 3 contains
quit-claim, sheriff’s, and warranty deeds for land transactions by Spencer M.
Hubbard in partnership with Beauregard Ross and Clark Dooley, 1888. Folder 4 contains miscellaneous items
pertaining to Spencer M. Hubbard’s personal business as well as papers
associated with his tenure as clerk of Texas County.
