Information Sheet
R East Prairie Lions Club.
682 Booklets and photographs, 1947-1996.
Two folders, photocopies.
These are
program booklets for annual rodeos (1947 and 1948), minstrel shows (1952,
1955-1958, 1960-1962, with photographs), “Jubilee” (1973), and the 70th
Anniversary (1996) of the Lions Club chapter in East Prairie,
The first two items in this collection are program booklets from rodeos sponsored by the East Prairie Lions Club on 4-5 July 1947 and 4-5 July 1948. The events were co-sponsored by East Prairie Post No. 7053 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and by local merchants. The booklets contain mostly advertising for area businesses, but also include some community history and information and schedules of events.
The third through tenth items are program booklets for annual minstrel shows presented by the East Prairie Lions Club. Programs are available for 1952, 1955, 1956, 1957, 1958, 1960, 1961, and 1962. The shows featured local performers, many of them in blackface, in a traditional “minstrel revue” musical-comedy format. Again, the bulk of each booklet consists of advertising for area businesses. The accompanying transparencies are copies of black-and-white photographs of the performers, probably from the early 1960s. Some of the performers are identified.
By 1973 the East Prairie Lions Club’s annual show was styled as a “Jubilee,” but it apparently continued the practice of musical and comedy presentations in a “revue” format.
The East Prairie Lions Club’s “70th Anniversary Celebration” was held on Saturday, 7 December 1996. The program booklet includes an account of the founding of the club in 1926, brief biographies of the first elected officers, and historical and current membership rosters.
