Sikeston, the preeminent town in Scott County, Missouri, celebrates its founding from the platting of the town in 1860 and the subsequent arrival of the Cairo & Fulton railroad.   John Sikes and Catherine Stallcup Sikes are credited as founders.   The booklet produced by Audrey Chaney was produced in connection with the town’s centennial in 1960.  The historical narrative includes a brief history of Sikeston, and information on early residents, notable citizens, public officials, public schools, Sikeston Methodist Episcopal College, early businesses, physicians, fraternal associations, and patriotic organizations.  There are many illustrations of historical and contemporary scenes, as well as the advertisements of the leading businesses in 1960.  The booklet also includes the program of the centennial pageant, “Pioneer Days Relived,” which was staged at the Sikeston High School athletic stadium on 13-18 June 1960.  Jo Ann Newlin directed the elaborate production.
