These are applications for membership in the John Matthews Post No. 69 of the Grand Army of the Republic in Springfield, Greene County, Missouri.  The applications bear the name, age, residence, and brief military history of the applicants, among whom were Charles E. Moss, John E. Phelps, and L. A. Rountree.

 

John Matthews Post No. 69 was the first of three Grand Army of the Republic posts estab­lished at Springfield, Missouri.  The collection consists of the application forms for nine individu­als, one of which is a transfer request from the Grand Army of the Republic post at Lindley, Mis­souri.  Each application includes the name, age, place of birth, current residence, occupation, and brief history of military service.  Three of the applications include details of service-related dis­abilities as recorded by the post surgeon.

 

The applicants represented service in the First Missouri Home Guard Cavalry, Fourth Mis­souri State Militia Cavalry, Thirteenth Missouri Cavalry, Fourteenth Missouri Cavalry, Sixteenth Missouri Cavalry, Twenty-fourth Missouri Infantry, Thirty-fifth Missouri Infantry, Forty-seventh Missouri Infantry, First Iowa Cavalry, and Second Arkansas Cavalry.  Two of the applicants, Charles E. Moss and John E. Phelps, were prominent citizens of Springfield after the war.  The oth­ers included farmers, a policeman, a stone cutter, an auctioneer, a broom maker, and a retired preacher.

 

The papers are arranged alphabetically by surname of the applicant.
