James Napoleon Cox was the second son of William Henry Cox and Mary Lightburn Womack Cox. The family came to Missouri from Kentucky about 1837, ultimately locating in what became North Dillon Township between St. James and Rolla. Rathbone was the local post office, 1892-1904. James N. Cox was a stockraiser and farmer, and became justice of the peace of North Dillon Township in the 1890s. He died on 26 January 1937, and is buried in the Cox Cemetery near St. James. Additional information on the Cox family, drawn from the St. James Journal, may be found in the information folder.
Cox’s records include two record books and a folder of miscellaneous papers. Volume 1 contains personal business accounts beginning on 12 October 1887 and continuing into June 1906. The personal accounts include ledger entries for lumber, fees for stallions standing at stud, and other farm expenses; notations of settlements in Phelps County Probate Court involving the estates of his brother, William Jackson Cox, sister-in-law, Bertha (Jahns) Cox, and surviving minor children; and personal financial matters. The volume also contains a few pages of records of matters handled by Cox as justice of the peace, 1894-1895 and 1911, primarily concerning poll taxes and debts. Both volumes contain indexes.
Volume 2 is James N. Cox’s official docket book, containing records of matters handled between 16 October 1912 and 25 January 1926. The volume includes stray notices and records of cases handled by Cox. Both civil and criminal matters are recorded, but most of the records have to do with poll taxes.
Folder 1 contains miscellaneous personal and official papers removed from the volumes. They are arranged in chronological order.
