R Grand Army of the Republic. Franklin Shanks Post No. 100
64 (Lutesville, Mo.).
Record
book, 1883-1889.
One volume, photocopies.
This is the record book of the Grand Army
of the Republic’s post at Lutesville in Bollinger County, Missouri. The volume includes minutes of meetings, 4
August 1883--10 July 1889, treasurer's reports, and communications addressed
to the post.
The Grand Army of the Republic was a
national association of Union Civil War veterans. This volume begins with the organization of the Lutesville
chapter on 4 August 1883. A. R. Jacques
was the first post commander. The
remainder of the volume consists of minutes of meetings, with a few “tip-ins”
of communications to the chapter. The
great bulk of the activities reported were mundane in nature, including the
recruitment of new members, payment of dues, and a regular treasurer’s
report. There was a committee concerned
with the status of veterans’ gravesites, and there was very occasional concern
over veterans’ pensions. The major
project of this period was a “reunion and campfire” held in Lutesville on 3-5
July 1886; an estimated 3000 attended.
The minutes for 8 August 1888 mention a Logan Monument Fund. The last meeting included in this volume occurred
on 10 July 1889.
