R Springfield Ladies Saturday Club
(Springfield, Mo.).
71 Minute
book, 1921-1928
One volume, 231 pp.
This is a minute book of a women’s club
at Springfield in Greene County, Missouri.
The volume includes minutes of meetings, 8 January 1921--12 May 1928,
and lists of members, 1923-1926.
The Springfield Ladies Saturday Club was
a social and study group organized in 1879.
It was one of the oldest such clubs in the state, and was one of the
earliest members of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs of Missouri. The Club's fortnightly meetings usually
consisted of two parts. The first was
devoted to reports on and discussions
of historical and political topics, and the second part included musical
performances and literary reviews.
Faculty members from Southwest Missouri State Teachers College and from
Drury College were frequent lecturers and guests. The club supported civic and social improvements through the
Springfield Chamber of Commerce, maintained a scholarship fund, and contributed
to the Greene County Tuberculosis Association and the Burge Hospital.
The club’s minute book contains minutes
of meetings beginning 8 January 1921 and continuing through 12 May 1928. Newspaper clippings reporting on the meeting
were frequently tipped-in and in some cases constitute the only record of the
meetings. The volume also includes
separate listings of members for 1923-1924, and 1925-1926.
