This is the “Subdistrict Record” for school Subdistrict No. 5, Smithfield School, in Jasper County, Missouri.  The volume includes minutes of meetings of the district and board of directors, estimates of school expenses, teachers’ contracts, and annual enumeration of residents and children.

Subdistrict No. 5 included the area in Township 28, Range 33 and 34, on the western edge of Jasper County.  The school was known as Smithfield School, after the nearby village of the same name.  Among the earliest directors were Dr. A. A. Andrews, J. T. Bruton, James M. Cassil, William Cooley, W. S. Glick, C. S. Portwood, Silas A. Stuckey, S. A. Underwood, and John Wilson.   In 1879, the directors voted to move the school site, after which a Baptist church was rented for school purposes prior to building a new schoolhouse.

The school’s records were kept in a “Subdistrict Record” published by Horace Wilcox of Jefferson City.  The minutes begin in 1870 and continue into 1882.  Enclosed with the records are two teachers’ contracts from 1896.
