                                    One folder.

This collection includes programs for literary exercises in 1889 and commencement exercises in 1890, 1891, 1894, and 1896, and an undated advertisement card for the Mountain Grove Academy at Mountain Grove in Wright County, Missouri.

Literary exercises for the Mountain Grove Academy were held on Thursday, 13 June 1889.  The program included musical performances and oral recitations by the students.  William H. Lynch was principal of the academy.

Commencement exercises were held on 13 June 1890, 11 June 1891, and 14 June 1894 under the direction of Principal William H. Lynch.  In 1890 Arthur H. Bailey delivered the valedictory and J. B. Merwin delivered the baccalaureate address.  In 1891 James O. Winningham delivered the valedictory address.  In 1894 Leonard Smalley delivered the valedictory and the Rev. M. B. DeWitt delivered the baccalaureate sermon.  The programs also included musical performances and oral recitations by the students.  A collection of William H. Lynch’s diaries and papers has been cataloged as WHMC-Rolla collection R202.

Commencement exercises under Principal L. S. Giffin were held on Friday evening, 12 June 1896, at the Opera House in Mountain Grove.  The graduating class consisted of four scholars: Effie Pulse, Curtis Giffin, Alberta Grimes, and Ray Schofield.  School Board President W. K. Dyer presented the diplomas after a program of musical performances and orations by the students and a “baccalaureate address” by the Rev. J. E. McDonald.

The undated advertisement card appears to be from the same era, although W. L. Oliver and W. S. Candler are listed as Principal and Secretary, respectively.  Identified as "Mountain Grove High School and Academy" on one side, the institution is represented as being "thoroughly practical and progressive," being located in "the Gem of the Ozarks."  A portrait photograph of Principal W. L. Oliver and an exterior illustration of the school building are on one side of the card, and a photographic view of Mountain Grove is on the other.
