This is the record book of the Oak Grove Church, north of St. James in Phelps County, Missouri.  The records consist primarily of a roster of members, 1888-1902.

The community of Oak Grove is nine miles north of St. James in the northeastern corner of Phelps County.  The Oak Grove Congregation of the Church of Christ was organized on 22 July 1888 under guidance of a Rev. Huff.  The first elders were D. C. Goff, James Simpson, Martin P. Breuer, William Breuer, G. W. Rinehart, L. J. Rinehart, and James Blackwell.  The first deacons were James Stultz, George McIntosh, Charles Breuer, Harold Krewson, and G. W. Rinehart.  Charles Breuer was the first clerk.

The volume begins with minutes of the organizational meeting on 22 July 1888.  The records consist mostly of a list of members (“enrollments”), deaths, and births.  Two hundred ninety-seven members are listed, along with the date of membership in the church.  Most of the records cover the period 1888-1902, but there are entries as late as 1926.  Among the most prominent surnames on the roster are Anderson, Blackwell, Breuer, Krewson, Lorts, Martin, Matlock, McIntosh, Rinehart, and Sewell.  Following the roster, there are brief accounts of money received, money expended, and incidental expenses.  The last entries concern a recommendation for J. P. Dillon as a minister.

The Oak Grove Congregation of the Church of Christ still meets for Sunday services.  A brief history of the Oak Grove Church, based partly on information from the church’s record book, was published in Volume 2 of Phelps County Heritage (Rolla, Mo.: Phelps County Genealogical Society, 1994), 127-128.
