These are the “Year Books” for 1951-1952, 1980-1981, and 1984-1985 for the Sorosis Club of Springfield in Greene County, Missouri.  Included are club calendars, the constitution and bylaws, lists of departments and officers, and membership rolls.

The Sorosis Club of Springfield, Missouri was organized in 1896 and incorporated in 1930.  Sorosis is the Greek word for “aggregation.”  According to its constitution, “Its object shall be to bring the Women of the city into communication for the promotion of higher intellectual, social, and moral conditions and to conduct and maintain a club house for same in the City of Springfield, Missouri.”  By 1951 the club had approximately 500 members and owned a handsome club house on fashionable Walnut Street.  In 1980 the membership was about 350, and the club still maintained the club house at 838 East Walnut.  But, by 1984 membership had fallen to about 280 and the club had moved to new quarters at 1207 North Campbell Avenue.

The 69-page booklet for 1951-1952 contains information about the club, including an every-name membership roll with home addresses and telephone numbers.  The large number of members allowed the club to be organized into several interest groups, called “Departments.”  These Departments included American Home, Audubon (“for the Study of Bird Life”), Book, Current Topics, Fine Arts, Garden, Hobby (membership list says “Junior Hobby Department”), Shakespearean, and Tourist.  Each department had its own officers and meeting schedule.

The 61-page booklet for 1980-1981 is similar in content.  At that time the “Departments” included American Home, Audubon, Book, Fine Arts, Garden, Hobby, Music, and Tourist.

The 60-page booklet for 1984-1985 follows the same format at the earlier volumes.  “Departments” at that time included American Home, Arts and Crafts (two sections), Audubon, Book, Fine Arts, Garden, Hobby, Music, and Tourist.
