848                  Booklets, 1959-1975.

                                    Five items.

These are booklets published for community centennial (1959), “homecoming” and Civil War centennial (1961, 1963, 1964), and “homecoming” (1975) celebrations at Leasburg in Crawford County, Missouri.

In 1959 the Leasburg Community Club established a Centennial Committee, chaired by Helen Coulson Land, to plan and execute a celebration of the community’s centennial of its founding.  This successful undertaking led to annual festivities, of which the one in 1975 was the seventeenth.  After the initial effort the occasions became “homecomings,” and during the centennial of the American Civil War (1861-1865/1961-1965) Leasburg highlighted its own piece of Civil War history, a running engagement fought near there in late September of 1864.

The booklets contain schedules of events, historical articles, descriptions of contemporary institutions and organizations, and many advertisements for local and area businesses.  Helen Coulson Land wrote and compiled many of the articles, and contributed a reminiscent foreword to the booklet for 1975.  The booklet for 1964 consists solely of photocopies of those pages that deal with Leasburg’s role in the Civil War.
