R Minneapolis, Little Rock and Gulf Railway Company.
849 Map, 1902.
One item.
This is a “Map of Part of Dent County, Mo. showing
route adopted by the Minneapolis, Little Rock
and Gulf Railway Co., 27 August 1902.” Lewis S.
Reed was president of the company; Wellington B. Johnson was chief engineer.
The Minneapolis, Little Rock and Gulf Railway was one
of a number of competing schemes about 1900 to construct a north-south rail
line through the Ozarks. Many of the
proposals had Gulf Coast ports as the ultimate destination. At the same time the Minneapolis, Little Rock
& Gulf drew up the papers for its line through Dent County, the Rock Island
railroad had surveyors in the field mapping a proposed line from Belle,
Missouri, through Rolla and West Plains, to Newport, Arkansas. Neither of the proposals ever reached the
point of construction.
The route map through Dent County shows the line passing north-south through the western
edge of Dent County, through the villages of Lecoma, Anutt, and
Lecoma. Present-day State Road O follows
the same line.
