These mimeographed school directories vary little in
format from year to year. Mrs. Hazel
Ponder was Superintendent for the entire period. The first page is a listing of state and
local office holders. Subsequent pages
contain lists of “high school districts,” one-room schools, and two-room
schools. The last page contains summary
statistics for the entire county.
At that time
During this period the total “enumeration” of
school-age children fell from 5,112 in 1943-1944 to only 4,677 in 1945-1946,
before recovering to 4,719 in 1946-1947.
In 1943-1944 there were 66 one-room schoolhouses, 11 two-room buildings,
6 “transported rural schools,” and 4 high schools. In 1946-1947 there were still 87 schools, but
only 61 were one-room, 8 were two-room, and 14 were “transported rural
schools.”
