Information Sheet
R Shelton, T. J.
873 Southwestern Miner, 1892.
One folder.
These are four issues from June, August, and October
1892 of the Southwestern Miner, a
newsletter “devoted exclusively to the Lead and Zinc mines of Missouri and Kansas.” Published
every week at Carterville, Missouri, by “Campbell & Shelton” and managed by T. J. Shelton, the journal included
production statistics and mining news items from southwestern Missouri and southeastern Kansas, and particularly from Jasper County, Missouri.
The “Shelton” of “Campbell & Shelton” was T. J. Shelton, who was “manager” of the Southwestern Miner. “Campbell” was probably A. J. Campbell, who ran advertisements
in the journal. This collection includes
issues for 9 June (Volume 1, No. 17), 4 August (Volume 1, No. 25), 13 October
(Volume 1, No. 35), and 28 October (Volume 1, No. 37) in 1892, when mineral
exploration and production in the area was at a peak. Included are detailed production and sales
statistics arranged geographically by place.
There are also news notes concerning the mining business, such as new
prospects and changes of ownership.
The Southwestern
Miner also included news items of a more general nature, such as an article
about “mining companies and how they operate,” news that the “street car
company” would soon be electrified and would extend its line to “the Troup
mines,” and accounts of the discoveries of prehistoric human and “elephant”
remains.
