885                  Papers, 1921-1952.

                                    One folder.

These are papers of Rotary Club No. 243 at Joplin in Jasper County, Missouri.  Included are membership rosters (1921-1945), newsletters (“Joplin Chats,” 1924-1952), and miscellaneous papers, mostly memorials of deceased members.

The Rotary Club of Joplin (No. 243) was organized on 12 February 1916 and chartered on 1 August 1916.  These items do not constitute a comprehensive collection of official papers, but instead are from the personal papers of long-time member Harry G. Butterfield, a jeweler.

This collection includes club membership rosters for 1921, 1923, 1925, 1931, and 1945.  The rosters list all members, with their vocational affiliations and business and home addresses.  Officers, directors, and committee members are listed separately.  A collection of newsletters (“Joplin Chats”) reflects Harry Butterfield’s active membership in the club.  In some cases there is only a dated typescript copy of Butterfield’s regular column, “Thus and So,” and no newsletter.

A section of miscellaneous papers includes a letter inviting Butterfield to speak at the club in Iola, Kansas, memorials to deceased members, and a newsletter from the Rotary Club at Fort Scott, Kansas, announcing a Butterfield’s scheduled talk to that Club in August 1939.
