These are programs for the Howell County Fair and
Stock Show held at Peoples Park in West Plains in Howell County, Missouri. The booklets
are for “county fairs” held on 4-7 September 1946 and 1-4 September 1948.
The Howell County Fair Association produced an annual
fair, styled as the Howell County Fair and Stock Show, at the county seat in West Plains, Missouri. The dominant
activity of the fair was “shows” (contests) in various farm-related
categories. These booklets include the
“General Rules and Regulations” for entrants and exhibitors, and lists of
specific categories and sub-categories and their awards. In 1946 the show categories included dairy
cattle, beef cattle, horses and mules, sheep, swine, fruits and vegetables,
field crops, home economics, a House Arts Club exhibit, 4-H Club exhibits, a
“Rural School Display,” a Future Farmers’ Department, a 4-H Clubs Livestock
Department, and home mechanics. In 1948
poultry was added to the livestock categories.
T. E. Wilke served as Executive Chairman of the Fair
Association for both events. Afternoon
and evening entertainment programs were featured at the fairs along with the
stock and crop shows.
