This is a letter dated 23 December 1917 from John J. Price at Peirce (now Pierce) City in Lawrence County, Missouri, to R. L. Ballou at Jefferson in Ashe County, North Carolina.  The letter concerns the possibility of Price taking over Ballou’s flour mill at Big Timber in Sweet Grass County, Montana.

This letter was written on the letterhead of “J. W. Vance, Merchant Miller,” at Peirce (now Pierce) City, Missouri.  Included is the cover envelope which features an illustration of the Peirce City Roller Mills, where Price was apparently “second” in command and making $100 per month.  He was asking $140 from Ballou to operate the mill at Big Timber.

Of particular interest to researchers is a license stamp (License No. E-4163) from the United States Food Administration on the letterhead.  Also, Price noted that “we are making nothing but 100% flour running day and night and can not possibly make it fast enough,” as the country supported participation in the First World War.
