Detachment, 73rd.
944 Newsletter, 1943.
One folder
This is a single issue of Cape Cadet (Vol. 1, No. 37, 4 December 1943), the newsletter of
the 73rd Army Air Forces Flying Training Detachment. This unit was stationed at Harris Field in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri. The
commanding officer was Captain Clarke Simonds.
The 73rd AAFFTD provided early instruction
in the development of military pilots during World War II. As this issue went to press, Class 44-D was
just leaving, Class44-E was in mid-training, and Class 44-F was just
arriving. The Cape Cadet was intended to be a breezy 8-page mimeographed
newsletter containing news of the facility and humorous personal items concerning
the trainees. Charles J. Smith was
editor, John F. Boyle was news editor, Daniel C. Cantor was feature
editor,
Norman C. Bye, Jr., was art editor, and Edward H. Jones, Michael Milinkovich,
and N. B. Smith served as “foreign correspondents.” The advisory officer was Lt. Peter J.
McGovern.
Full names, where available, have been indexed. Harris Field is now the site of the Cape Girardeau Regional Airport.
