R         Edwards & Knisely.

948                  Correspondence, 1895.

                                    One folder.

These are two items from Edwards & Knisely, “dealers in staple and fancy groceries,” at Clinton in Henry County, Missouri, to A. J. Stillwell in Hannibal, Missouri.  They concern the purchase of smoked and salted meat, and lard.

In 1895 W. H. Edwards took on his young brother-in-law, Oliver W. Knisely, as a partner in his grocery business at the corner of Ohio and Seventh streets in Clinton, Missouri.  A special census of that year showed Oliver living in the Edwards home.  Many years later Knisely would take on his in-laws, J. H. and J. W. Chastain, as partners at the same location.

These items, both signed by W. H. Edwards, are a handwritten order dated 7 September 1895 on Edwards & Knisely letterhead, and another handwritten note dated 1 October 1895 on an Edwards & Knisely statement form.  Both dealt with orders from A. J. Stillwell & Company of Hannibal, Missouri, for beef and lard.
