R First Baptist Church (Jackson, Mo.).
959 Sesquicentennial booklet,
1974.
One folder.
This is a booklet issued in celebration of the
sesquicentennial of the First Baptist Church at Jackson in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri. Included are
previous short histories compiled in 1934 and 1949, as well as a
sesquicentennial update to 1974.
The First Baptist Church of Jackson was organized on 30 April 1824 by members of Old Bethel Baptist Church, which claimed to be the first non-Catholic
congregation west of the Mississippi
River. This 44-page booklet was issued in 1974 to
celebrate the 150th anniversary of the establishment of the
congregation. Included are reprints of
histories compiled in 1934 and 1949, along with a supplement to 1974. The church is located at 212 S. High Street in Jackson, which is the seat of Cape Girardeau County, Missouri. A photograph
of the church is on the front cover of the booklet, while an illustration of “Old Bethel Baptist Church” (1806-1867) is on the back cover.
The 1934 history was compiled by the Rev. S. H. Hardy,
while the subsequent histories were written by committees. The 1934 section includes the congregation’s
covenant and articles of faith, and all include brief biographies of former and
current pastors. The 1974 history
includes a program for the sesquicentennial celebration held on 30 April to 5 May 1974. Photographic
portraits of “former living pastors” are on the page 42.
