These are a “souvenir program” for the Third Annual
J-Bar-H Ranch Championship Rodeo held on 7-11 July 1954, a promotional brochure
for the rodeo held on 7-12 July 1958, and a “souvenir program” for the 13th
annual J-Bar-H Championship Rodeo, held on 27 June-4 July 1964 at Camdenton in
The forty-page booklet for the third annual event in
1954 includes photographic portraits of producers Harry and Jean Nelson and
stock contractors E. C. and Ken Roberts.
Also listed are announcer Gene Payne, “official movie photographers”
Tupper Smith, John Conway, Doc Lowe, and Smoky Szatkowski, and still
photographer O. J. Hebrank. There are
descriptions of the various events, a list of world’s champions, and
photographs of rodeo stars Casey Tibbs, J. W. Stoker, Bill Linderman, and Ken
Boen along with many advertisements for area businesses.
The brochure for 1958 noted that over 75,000 persons
had attended the event at its 13,000-seat arena in 1957. Scheduled to appear along with Western film
and recording star Rex Allen were Koko (“the most beautiful horse in the
world”), the Frontiersmen (“Western music makers supreme”), and a “sensational
Indian spectacular.”
This 40-page illustrated booklet for 1964 described
the J-Bar-H as “the nation’s largest outdoor rodeo.” Included were descriptions of the categories
of competition (bareback riding, calf roping, saddle bronc, steer wrestling,
Brahma bull riding, and wild horse race) and many advertisements for area
businesses. The rodeo was produced by
Harry B. and Jean E. Nelson of J-Bar-H Enterprises, assisted by W. E. “Cy”
Whorrall (comptroller), Dr. C. F. Maley (veterinarian), Don Fedderson and Pat
Scudder (judges), and Hoss Inman (stock contractor). Rex Allen and television star Michael Landon
were celebrity entertainers at the event.
