1907: Joplin, Mo.). Publicity Committee.
981 Booklet, 1907.

This is The
World’s Greatest Zinc and Lead District, as seen through the Camera. It was published for the Tenth American Mining
Congress, which met at Joplin in Jasper County, Missouri, on 11-16 November 1907. Included are a transportation map of the
mining district and many photographic views of mines, mills, towns and cities
in the area.
The American Mining Congress held its tenth
annual
session at Joplin, Missouri, on 11-16 November 1907. The Publicity Committee published this
90-page booklet as a souvenir of the meeting and a guide to the Tri-State
Mining District (herein called the Missouri-Kansas-Oklahoma-Arkansas Mining
District). At the beginning of the
volume are a brief history of mining in the area, a summary of the district’s
mineral resources, and a historical table of tonnages and value of lead and
zinc ores produced in the district.
On page 9 there is a group portrait of the “Committee
of 50” representing the four states and assembled at the Commercial Club of
Joplin. The remaining pages contain
photographic views of mines and ore mills, as well as scenes in the area’s
mining cities and towns. Of particular
interest are views of the “new” Auditorium Building in Joplin, where the Congress would meet, homes of the
successful mining entrepreneurs, schools, street scenes, banks, industrial
sites, and “the Quapaw Indian Tribe at Baxter,
Kansas.”
