This collection includes a certificate of “Souvenir Stock” in Ripley County Centennial, Inc., a centennial booklet, a promotional brochure, and two souvenir pinback buttons for the Ripley County Centennial celebration at Doniphan, Missouri, on 17-22 August 1959.

 

Although the original Ripley County, Missouri, was organized in 1833, it assumed its final size and location, and Doniphan was named the county seat, in 1859.  Ripley County Centennial, Inc., organized a centennial celebration that was held at Doniphan on 17-22 August 1959.

 

This collection consists of six items:

 

1) Certificate No. 20 for five shares of “Souvenir Stock” in Ripley County Centennial, Inc., issued to Riverdale Lodge, c/o Frank L. Sadorf.  The certificate was “redeemable pro rata out of funds on hand as of September 15, 1959 ... at no more than the value of one dollar per share, ... during the month of September, 1959.  Thereafter this certificate is not redeemable ...”

 

2) Centennial booklet, 52 pages, illustrated, containing historical sketches of the county, its communities, churches, and organizations, and advertisements for area businesses.  Included are membership lists for the committees that organized and ran the centennial celebration.

 

3) Tri-fold flyer, 8½ by 11, containing the daily schedule of events and additional informa­tion about the centennial celebration, including the historical pageant, “Wilderness to Wonder­land.”

 

4) Paper sign saying “Welcome to Ripley County Governor Warren E. Hearnes.”

 

5) Pinback button identifying the wearer as a member of the “Brothers of the Brush.”

 

6) Pinback button, with attached bell, identifying the wearer as a “Centennial Belle.”
