Information Sheet
R Coleman, W. S.
1012 Collection, n.d.
One folder.
These are labels for cans of “Rosan” blackberries and
“Pal-O’-Mine” green beans, packed by W. S. Coleman at his cannery at Willow
Springs in Howell County, Missouri.
Howell County was
one of several counties in southern Missouri
promoted as fruit and vegetable growing areas in the early twentieth
century. The St. Louis-San Francisco
Railway Company was a prime mover in the effort, interested not only in freight
revenues from agricultural exports along its Memphis line (the former Kansas
City, Fort Scott & Memphis Railway), but also in land sales for small farms
along its route. Brandsville, Pomona, West Plains, and Willow Springs in Howell County,
and neighboring Koshkonong in Oregon
County were all promoted
by the railroad company as fruit and vegetable growing centers.
The labels from W. S. Coleman’s cannery in Willow
Springs are for cans of blackberries (1 lb., 4 oz.), and green beans (1 lb., 3
oz.).
