This is a certificate for 150 shares of stock in the Zeta Land and Mining Company of Inde­pendence in Jackson County, Missouri.  The certificate was issued to John P. Jackson, who was the president of the firm.  The company owned mineral land and mines in Newton County, Mis­souri.

 

According to papers filed with the Missouri Secretary of State (Certificate of Incorporation No. 13245) the Zeta Land and Mining Company was organized on 1 February 1902 and incorpo­rated on 8 February 1902, with $36,000 in capital raised through the sale of 3600 shares of stock.  The shareholders were John A. Sea, A. M. Woodson, Harriet Groesbeck, John P. Jackson, James A. Callahan, William H. Renick, Joel E. Oldham, F. E. Lane, and Mattie F. Alderson of Independ­ence and Oliver Maxwell of Kansas City.  Jackson, Woodson, Lane, Sea, and Callahan served as the Board of Directors.

 

This is stock certificate No. 1, dated 19 March 1902 and issued to company president John P. Jackson and signed by Jackson and corporate secretary J. E. Oldham, for 150 shares at $10 per share.  Written crosswise on the face of the certificate are “Ordered Annulled and Nos. 30 + 31 is­sued in lieu of, Mar 13/03,” and “The Capital Stock of the Company consists of the SW ¼ if Sec. 11, Twp. 26, Range 33 in Newton County Missouri, and the mines and improvements therein.”  The transfer form on the back of the certificate indicates that John P. Jackson transferred the shares to “Jno. A. Sea as Treasurer” on 24 April 1902.

 

Papers on file in the Missouri Secretary of State’s office list the “Officers as of 1940” as president N. D. Jackson and secretary H. L. Sea, both of Independence.  However, the company’s charter was forfeited as of 1 January 1942 for failure to file an annual registration and statement with the Secretary of State.
