This is a “Programme of Exercises of the First Annual Exhibition of Cape Girardeau Acad­emy,” held at Cape Girardeau in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri, on 28 June 1855.  Included were elocutions and declamations by students, with musical interludes.

 

The Cape Girardeau Academy appears to have been established in 1854, using the first floor of the newly-erected Presbyterian Church.  Enrollment was restricted to boys, and the list of participants in these exercises indicates that the enrollment was drawn from nearby communities, such as Commerce, as well as Cape Girardeau.

 

This “First Annual Exhibition” was held on Thursday evening, 28 June 1855.
