This is a certificate for 200 shares in the Jasper County Tanning Company, which had of­fices at Carthage in Jasper County, Missouri, and property at Carthage and at Pittsburg in Craw­ford County, Kansas.  The certificate was issued to A. J. Porter on 1 October 1924 and signed by President P. C. Gruver and Secretary Lester E. Forbes.

 

According to Articles of Incorporation filed with the Missouri Secretary of State, the Jasper County Tanning Company was incorporated on 20 September 1924, papers were filed for the re­cord on 24 September 1924, and the company was certified by the Secretary of State on 26 Sep­tember 1924.  Capitalization was $300,000 divided among 300,000 shares.  P. C. Gruver (9902 shares), F. M. Geeslin (5000), H. E. Bradley (7400), W. N. Scott (4166) and Lester E. Forbes (7000) were the major investors and comprised the first Board of Directors.  The company owned real property in Carthage, Missouri, and Pittsburg, Kansas, that was valued at $50,000 and $13,500 respectively.  The firm also owned “secret formulas and processes for tanning various kinds of hides, furs and skins by a short method” that it valued at $25,000.  The company forfeited its state charter on 1 January 1931 due to failure to submit an annual registration to the Secretary of State.

 

This certificate number 39 for 200 shares was issued to A. J. Porter on 1 October 1924.
