St. Francis Hospital
was founded and operated by the Franciscan sisters, an order of the Roman
Catholic Church. Beginning their work in
Cape Girardeau
in 1876, they erected a 75-bed hospital in 1914. Construction for this 28-bed addition began
on 1 June 1938. It included a cloister
for the sisters, and facilities for the physiotherapy, diathermy, basal
metabolism, and orthopedic departments and two operating rooms. This 12-page booklet includes photographic
views of the new facilities.
