This is a promotional pamphlet for the Old Dominion
Mining Company at Joplin in Jasper County, Missouri. Included are data about the firm’s officers,
physical plants, and photographs of its mines, mills, and equipment. C. M. Sheldon was president and treasurer and
E. P. Rhodes was secretary and auditor of the company.
According to the pamphlet, the Old Dominion Mining
Company was engaged in lead and zinc production in the Joplin District, under
the advice of consulting engineers Plumb & Sansom of Joplin.
Mills in operation were the Iroquois, the I Know, the Talisman, the
Edwinna, the Big Whitsett, the Kansas,
and the Buxton, with a total daily capacity of 2,400 tons. There are photographs of the Iroquois Mill,
I Know Mill, Talisman Mill, Edwinna Mill, Big Whitsett Mill, Iroquois Mine,
Kansas Mill, Buxton Mill, Broadhurst Mine (on I Know ground), Greenwood Mine
(on I Know ground), Alabama and Big Whitsett Mills (both in the Porto Rico
District), the boiler room at the Talisman Mine, the Big 8 Mine (on I Know
ground), the Westinghouse hoisters at the Big Whitsett Mine, the cull room and
grizzley at the Big Whitsett Mine, men descending the shaft at the Talisman Mine,
a prospecting drill on Iroquois ground, an Ajax drill sharpener at the Big
Whitsett Mill, the engine room at the I Know Mill, the Westinghouse motor at
the Alabama Mill, the Sullivan air compressor at the Talisman Mine, and the
interior of the Alabama Mill.
Directors of the firm included C. M. Sheldon (formerly
President of the First National Bank of Burlingame,
Kan.), Robert Scott (Cashier of First National
Bank of Wamego, Kan.), Grant Hornaday (President of First
National Bank of Fort Scott, Kan.), James S. Cunningham (President of the
Knoxville Bank, Knoxville, Iowa), J. P. Shelton (Cashier of Heyworth State
Bank, Heyworth, Ill.), W. R. Jones (President of Bank of Amoret, Amoret, Mo.),
E. P. Rhodes (Auditor of the company), A. Anderson (President of First National
Bank of Columbus, Neb.), and J. L. Senior (formerly of Fisher & Senior
Bank, Waverly, Kan.).
According to an “Evidence of Incorporation” filed with
the Missouri Secretary of State on 13 August 1910 and signed by C. M. Sheldon,
president, and J. Meyer, secretary, the Old Dominion Mining Company was
incorporated in Arizona on 26 June 1907, with
an office in Kansas City, Kansas.
Of the firm’s $1,000,000 capitalization, $200,000 was assigned to the
operations in Missouri. The original incorporators were N. C.
DeVault, L. J. Reynolds, and C. G. Boyer.
The company forfeited its license in Missouri on 2 December 1913 for reason of
failure to file an annual registration.
