R Camp
Yocum (Galena, Mo.).
1148 Pamphlet, ca. 1920.
One folder.
This is a folded single-sheet illustrated pamphlet for
Camp Yocum,
a summer resort on the James River near Galena
in Stone County, Missouri.
Although the pamphlet is undated, Camp Yocum
is known to have been active in the early 1920s.
Camp Yocum described itself in this pamphlet as “not a
fashionable resort, with its crowd of people, artificial attractions and
excessive prices.” Instead it offered
swimming and fishing in the James River,
hiking to nearby caves and bluffs, and lots of peace and quiet. Screened 12’ by 24’ bungalows rented for $16
per week, and transportation was offered from and to the railroad depot at Galena, about 2.5 miles
away. The illustrations are from
realphoto postcards, and show the bathing beach and bungalows, White Rock Bluff
on the other side of the James River, and
owner Tom Yocum hefting a large stringer of freshly-caught fish. Prospective patrons were advised to contact
D. M. Standridge at Galena
“for particulars.”
Camp Yocum was
later known as Camp
Blackstone.
