These are the scrapbooks of the Libra Club, a women’s club at Lebanon in Laclede County, Missouri.  The scrapbooks include newspaper clippings, annual booklets, photographs, and miscellaneous papers.

The Libra Club was founded in 1950 as a Junior Club of the Missouri Federation of Women’s Club under the auspices of the Round Table Club of Lebanon.  There were sixteen members.  The membership was restricted to that number by charter, but was later raised to twenty and then twenty-five members.  Patti Hurst was the first president.

In 1968, the Libra Club ceased to be a federated club and devoted its efforts strictly to local community projects.  In the same year the club sponsored organization of the Philia Club, a junior women’s club.

Club activities over the years have included sponsoring Girl Scout activities, promoting city beautification and progressive government, assisting the Red Cross Bloodmobile, sponsoring the Sophomore Pilgrimage to Jefferson City, helping Wallace and Breech hospitals in Lebanon, funding a memorial to Juanita Donnelly in the rose garden of the governor’s mansion in Jefferson City, supporting the Special Olympics, promoting a new library, and establishing a scholarship fund for graduates of Lebanon High School.  Many of these endeavors, as well as social events, were co-hosted with other service groups in Lebanon including the Round Table Club, the Shakespeare Club, and the Philia Club.

The records of the Libra Club consist of four scrapbooks containing newspaper clippings, photographs, annual booklets, thank you notes, and miscellaneous correspondence and papers.  The materials begin with the organization of the club in 1950 and continue through 2003.

Volume 1 includes a history of the Sixth District, Missouri Federation of Women’s Clubs, of which the Libra Club was a part until 1968.  Volume 4 contains the club’s annual booklets or yearbooks showing the officers, meeting places, and program topics for the club year (September through May).  The volume also contains a complete listing of the club’s officers, 1950-2000.  Miscellaneous papers and correspondence, 1967-2003, have been filmed in chronological order at the end of Volume 4.
