R         Farmers Cooperative League.

1154                Booklet, 1909.

                                    One folder.

This is a booklet containing the “National Constitution and By-Laws” of the Farmers Cooperative League, an organization dedicated to improving the economic condition of farmers.  W. R. Noble of Joplin in Jasper County, Missouri, served as Secretary.

This 48-page booklet presents the “National Constitution and By-Laws” of the Farmers (also styled as Farmer’s and Farmers’) Cooperative League.  A lengthy preamble (pages 5-8) is based upon the Declaration of Independence, while a Declaration of Purposes (pages 8-9) urges the elimination of middlemen, speculators, and the futures markets.  The constitution itself (pages 10-42) spells out the requirements for the organization of Local Leagues, County Leagues, and a national conference.  By-Laws are found on pages 43-46, along with a price list of supplies.

Membership in the League was restricted to actual farmers, who were also white, male, 21 years of age or older, and who believed in a “supreme being.”  Article X of the constitution called for the establishment of a “County Warehouse,” run by a “County Manager,” or agent, in each county, to be operated solely for the benefit of farmer members.

The Ray Printing Company of Purcell, Missouri, printed the booklet.
