This is a hand-drawn map entitled “Plat of the Principal Lead Mines in Jefferson & St. François Counties, State of Missouri.”  Included are Township 38 North, Range 5 East, and the eastern third of Township 38 North, Range 4 East.  The creator of the map is unknown.

This hand-colored map was drawn at a scale of “25 chains to 1 inch, or 1650 feet to one inch.”  Principal landowners are shown for most quarter-sections, and occasionally smaller.  The plats are color-coded, but there is no legend to explain the code.  Many holdings of the Valle Mining Company are shown in yellow.  The map’s area includes present-day St. Francois State Park and part of the community of Valles Mines.  An area called the “Appleberry Tract” is highlighted by a hash-marked border.  The map is undated, but the route of the Mississippi River & Bonne Terre railroad, which was completed in 1890, is indicated by a red dashed line.
