R Philia Club (
1190 Records, 1961-2004.
Two volumes, three folders, twenty-five booklets.
These are minutes of meetings, a scrapbook, and
miscellaneous papers of the Philia Club, a women’s club at
The Philia Club organized on 11 January 1961 with help
of the Libra Club of Lebanon. The club’s
purpose was the development of individual and community service and social and
intellectual improvement. Mrs. David
McClure was the first president of the club, membership of which was limited to
twenty members. The Philia Club joined the
national and state federations of women’s clubs in April and March 1961,
respectively. It was the fifth federated
women’s club formed in
The club supported many local charitable causes, often
in conjunction with the Libra Club, Optimist Club, Jaycees, and other community
organizations. For many years the club’s
main fundraising activity was the annual Charity Ball, proceeds from which were
donated to the Breech Medical Center, Kinderhook Regional Library, Area XVII
Special Olympics, Arts Council, Girl Scouts, Project Misdemeanant, the Laclede
County group home, sheltered workshop, counseling center and pregnancy support
center, Lebanon High School, and many other local organizations and causes. About 1987, the club began a college
scholarship program for
The records of the club in this collection consist of
a scrapbook, a volume containing minutes of meetings, annual program booklets,
miscellaneous papers, and newspaper clippings pertaining to the annual Charity
Ball. Taken together, the records span
nearly the entire existence of the club.
Additional scrapbooks for 1970-2003, not microfilmed, are in the
Lebanon-Laclede County Public Library.
