R         Woman’s Benefit Association.

1193                Booklet, n.d.

                                    One folder.

This is a promotional booklet for Franklin Camp, a summer camp for women and girls near Sugarcreek in Venango County, Pennsylvania.  The camp was operated by the Woman’s Benefit Association, which also operated a similar camp near Hollister in Taney County, Missouri.

The Woman’s Benefit Association was established in 1892 by Bina M. West, who was “Supreme Commander” of the W.B.A. Summer Camp Club.  Essentially a fraternal benefit society that offered life insurance and other financial policies, the W.B.A. became the North American Benefit Association in 1966 and the Woman’s Life Insurance Society in 1996.  Its corporate headquarters are in Port Huron, Michigan.

This illustrated, eight-page booklet is undated, but it appears to be from the 1920s or 1930s.  Included are descriptions of the camp and its facilities, activities, rates, rules, and location.  The W.B.A. also operated camps at Port Huron, Mich., Salamanca, N.Y., and at Hollister in Taney County, Missouri.
