These are two letters from John Deane at Potosi in Washington County, Missouri, to his nephew, John Deane, at New Rochelle, N.Y., dated 4 May 1853, and to “Friend Leland,” no place given, dated 12 March 1854.  The letters concern wagons, horses, mules, “silver mineral,” and the weather.

Very little is known about John Deane.  In 1845 he secured bonds given by Malice Deane and Rachel Kelly, “free Negroes,” and indentured Austin Kelly, “a Negro boy ten years old.”  John Deane died on 12 August 1866, and is buried in St. James Catholic Cemetery in Potosi.

These holograph letters deal with everyday concerns, such as the tread width of wagons required for Missouri’s primitive roads, horses, mules, and the shipment of “a load of that silver mineral” to Selma.
