These are cancelled checks, numbered from #17137 to #38686, and dated from 2 July 1898 to 17 January 1901, written against the account of the Doe Run Lead Company of Doe Run, Missouri, at the Farmers’ and Miners’ Bank of Bonne Terre in St. Francois County, Missouri.  The checks were signed by F. P. Graves, Secretary.

The Doe Run Lead Company was incorporated in Missouri on 8 November 1886 by J. Wyman Jones, Gustave Setz, Charles B. Parsons, and Fayette P. Graves.  The company engaged in lead mining and processing in St. Francois County, Missouri, until it was absorbed by the St. Joseph Lead Company in 1917.

These checks appear to have been written to pay for general operating expenses of the firm, including employees and supplies.  There are frequent gaps in the numerical sequence, indicating checks that have been discarded, lost, or otherwise disposed of over time.  The checks have been filed in numerical order, which also represents their chronological order.  The checks contain only the names of the payees, and do not include the purposes for which the checks were written.
