1233 Records, 1896-1945.
Three volumes and one folder.
OVERSIZE
These are the records of the Hickory
Grove School
in southeastern Washington County,
Missouri. Included with the records are four copy
prints of class photographs, ca. 1925-1937, and a list of teachers at the
school, 1898-1945.
Hickory Grove School mostly served students living in Concord
Township near the eastern boundary of Washington County between Caledonia and
Bismarck (in Saint Francois County), with a few hailing from Bellview Township. Most of the 15 to 25 students had postal
addresses at Bismarck; those from Bellview Township had postal addresses at
Irondale.
The records of Hickory Grove
School consist of two
record books kept by the district clerk, and a record book of the school
board. The district clerk’s records
include minutes of the board of directors, a daily attendance record, annual
enumerations of students in the district, records of warrants issued, oaths of
directors, and teachers’ contracts. The
record book of the Board of Education contains similar records and includes
statistical information on the students for each term as required by Missouri statutes. An all-name index to the volumes is
available. Volumes 2 and 3 are OVERSIZE.
The Denton,
Wallen, Williams, and Wood families are well represented in the records. The Hickory Grove collection derives from the
Denton family,
two of whom, S. P. Denton and Robert M. Denton,
were the district clerks during the period represented. Also from the Denton
family are copy prints of four class photographs from Hickory School,
ca. 1925, ca. 1927, ca. 1929, and 1937 (most individuals are identified), and a
partial list of the teachers at Hickory Grove, 1898-1945.
