These are six teacher’s contracts (1894-1900) and a
teacher’s certificate (1901) for Jesse Russell Simonson in Jasper County, Missouri. There are three contracts for rural schools,
and three contracts for Carterville
Public School.
Jesse Russell Simonson was born in Illinois
in 1874 and by 1894 was in Jasper
County, Missouri,
where he contracted to teach in District No. 5 for $24 per month, plus $1 per
month for janitorial duties. In 1895 he
moved to District No. 3 at $25 per month, and in 1897 he taught at District No.
9 for $30 per month (including janitorial work). Also in 1897 he married Helen Ellen “Ella”
Talbott. Their son, Jesse Francis
“Frank” Simonson was born at Carterville,
Missouri, in 1898.
In 1898 J. R. Simonson contracted to teach in the Carterville Public School for $35 per month, raised
to $45 per month the next year. On 12
April 1901 Simonson was issued a teacher’s certificate good for three years in Jasper County,
but apparently soon thereafter he and his family moved to Whatcom County, Washington,
where he became superintendent of schools at Everson. Simonson died in Washington in 1909, soon after the birth of
his second son, William Russell Simonson.
