This is the “20th Anniversary Souvenir -- 1913-1933” booklet for Alhambra Grotto of the Mystic Order of Veiled Prophets of the Enchanted Realm.  Headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri, Alhambra Grotto maintained a “country club” on the Frisco Railway west of Newburg along Little Piney Creek in Phelps County, Missouri.

The Mystic Order of Veiled Prophets of the Enchanted Realm was a “Play Ground for Master Masons,” somewhat similar to the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine (the “Shriners”).  The St. Louis “Grotto” was organized in 1913 and chartered as Alhambra Grotto in 1914.  In 1920 it purchased the historic Liederkranz Society Hall on South Grand Avenue in St. Louis, across from Tower Grove Park.  The building was extensively remodeled and turned into a modern club facility, complete with banquet halls, an auditorium/ballroom, bowling alleys, billiard hall, card room, and Masonic chambers.  In 1931 the Grotto purchased land on the St. Louis-San Francisco (“Frisco”) Railway along Little Piney Creek just west of Newburg in Phelps County.  There it installed a small railroad station, a capacious clubhouse, cottages, and recreational facilities.

This illustrated 64-page booklet was published to celebrate the Grotto’s twentieth anniversary in 1933.  Included are a comprehensive history of the Grotto, photographs of the facilities in St. Louis and Phelps County, portraits of officers, accounts of the club’s many organized activities, and an every-name membership roster.  The Monarch (club president) for 1933 was Guy Winkle and the Chief Justice was Oscar G. Kirchner.  The booklet also includes many advertisements for area businesses.
