This is a report
of the death of Pvt. James Perkins of Co. G, Ninth Missouri State Militia
Cavalry. Perkins died 3 November 1864 of
acute bronchitis at the U. S. Army General Hospital at Rolla, Phelps County,
Missouri.
James Perkins
enlisted on 20 January 1864 at Macon as a replacement in Capt. Thomas B. Reed’s
Company G the Ninth Missouri State Militia.
The Ninth regiment was raised in and spent most of its service in central
Missouri. Perkins seems to have joined the unit when the Ninth was posted at
Macon, guarding the North Missouri and Hannibal & St. Joseph
railroads. Perkins probably came to
Rolla when the regiment was posted there April-August 1864. He probably remained behind sick when the
regiment headed back to northern Missouri.
Whatever the case, Perkins died at Rolla on 3 November 1864. His death was reported on a pre-printed form
from the U. S. Army General Hospital at Rolla, reported by Acting Assistant
Surgeon R. Crowell. Perkins was among
seventy-six enlisted men of the Ninth who succumbed to disease during the
war. He is buried at Jefferson Barracks
National Cemetery, St. Louis.
