R Goodman, Thomas A.
160 “El
Jane of the Ozarks,” ca. 1925.
One folder, photocopies.
This is a seven-page, illustrated
pamphlet advertising the sale of the “El Jane” property in Arcadia, Iron
County, Missouri. The 500-acre estate
was to have been the permanent residence of Thomas A. Goodman of Chicago,
Illinois.
Goodman’s estate, “El Jane,” included a
six-bedroom residence, two guesthouses, a forest cabin, and a greenhouse. There were barns and outbuildings to
accommodate a herd of seventy-five dairy cattle. All of the buildings were supplied with water from a single large
spring on the property, and were appointed with the most modern conveniences
and furnishings of the day.
This pamphlet, which advertises the sale
of the estate, includes descriptions and photographs of the property and
buildings, and contains a glowing description of the Arcadia Valley, ninety
miles south of St. Louis, as a land where “the wild violet blooms while St.
Louisans are still shoveling paths through the snow.” It was additionally claimed that mosquitoes
in the valley did not bite, and that the water of the area was well known for
its medicinal value. Boosted as a perfect
opportunity for a gentleman’s country home or a country club, the property was
offered for occupancy by 1 June 1926.
Interested parties were directed to apply at Goodman’s offices at St.
Louis or Chicago.
