R Christ Church Episcopal (Rolla, Mo.).
161 Records,
1899-1985.
Twenty-six folders.
These are records of Christ Church
Episcopal in Rolla, Missouri, and its women’s auxiliary, St. Margaret’s
Guild. Included are records of church
services, minutes of committee meetings, and financial records, 1899-1970, the
records of St. Margaret’s Guild, ca. 1910-1983, and miscellaneous historical
materials, ca. 1910-1985.
Christ Church Episcopal began in 1870 as
an unorganized mission. The Rev.
William Johnson served the small congregation once a month, making the trip
from Trinity Church at Lebanon, Missouri.
The Diocese of Missouri accepted the Rolla church as an organized member
in 1879. The Rev. Johnson moved from
Lebanon to Rolla in 1881 and initiated construction of a church building. The building was completed in 1882 and was
dedicated on Easter Sunday. The building
stood until 1950, when work was begun on a brick edifice to replace the
original wooden structure. The new
building was completed in 1951. A
parish hall with classroom facilities was completed in 1964. Additional improvements to the buildings and
grounds were made in 1974 and 1981.
The records of Christ Church are
incomplete, especially for the earliest period of its history. The extant materials have been organized
into three groups. They consist of
church records, including logs of services held, treasurer's records, and
minutes of meetings; the records of St. Margaret’s Guild; and various clippings,
notes, and printed materials on the history of the church and its members. The historical materials include “A Centennial Story” of Christ Church Episcopal,
1882-1982, by two members of the history faculty at the University of Missouri-Rolla,
Donald B. Oster and Lance Williams.
Using church records and other sources, the authors chronicled the development
of the church and highlighted the ministries of several of its pastors. Oster and Williams also pointed out the
close connections between the church and UM-Rolla (formerly the University of
Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy).
Many of the faculty, staff, and students at MSM/UMR have been members of
the congregation, including Charles P. Williams, the school’s first director.
