This is one of a thousand one dollar promissory notes issued by B. F. Carney at Crane in Stone County, Missouri.  The notes were issued to prove a Depression-era theory of money, and they circulated widely as currency in the community.  A photocopy of a letter written by Car­ney’s son in 1969 explains the history of the notes.
